The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the single most important form for accessing financial aid for college. It determines your eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work-study, plus most state and institutional aid.

This guide walks you through the 2024-25 simplified FAFSA — the biggest overhaul in 40 years — with fewer questions, mandatory IRS data import, and a new aid formula.

Before You Start: What You Need

Required for Everyone

FSA ID — Create at studentaid.gov. Both student and one parent (if dependent) need separate IDs. Allow 1-3 days for Social Security Administration verification.
Social Security numbers — For student and parent(s)
Driver's license (if you have one)
List of colleges — Up to 20 schools to receive your FAFSA data

Financial Documents (2022 Tax Year)

2022 federal tax returns — IRS Form 1040
W-2 forms — For all jobs held in 2022
Records of untaxed income — Child support received, veterans benefits, etc.
Current bank statements — Checking and savings
Investment records — Stocks, bonds, 529 plans, real estate (excluding primary home)
Business/farm records — If applicable (now required regardless of size)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Create Your FSA ID {#step-1}

Go to studentaid.gov and select "Create Account." You'll need:

Your Social Security number
Your own email address (not shared with parent)
Your own mobile number (for two-factor authentication)

Pro tip: Create the FSA ID at least a week before you plan to file. The Social Security Administration verification can take 1-3 days.

Step 2: Gather Documents {#step-2}

Step 3: Start the FAFSA {#step-3}

Log in at studentaid.gov with the student's FSA ID
Select "Start New Form" → "2024-25"
Create a save key (temporary password) to share with your parent

Step 4: Student Demographics {#step-4}

Enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your Social Security card. Common errors:

Nicknames instead of legal names
Missing middle initials
Incorrect Social Security numbers

Step 5: School Selection {#step-5}

Search by federal school code (found on college websites) or name. Order matters for some state aid programs — list your top choice first. You can add/remove schools later.

Step 6: Dependency Status {#step-6}

The FAFSA asks up to 10 questions to determine dependency. You're independent if you:

Are 24 or older by Jan 1, 2025
Are married
Have children/dependents you support
Are a veteran or active duty military
Are an orphan, ward of court, or emancipated minor
Are homeless or at risk of homelessness

Most undergraduate students under 24 are dependent and must provide parent info.

Step 7: Parent Information {#step-7}

Which parent(s)?

Married parents: both
Divorced/separated: the parent you lived with more in past 12 months (or who provided more financial support)
Remarried: include stepparent's info too

Parent demographics: Name, SSN, date of birth, email, marital status, household size.

Step 8: Financial Information — IRS Direct Data Exchange {#step-8}

This is now mandatory for most families. When prompted:

Select "Link to IRS"
Log in with your FSA ID
Confirm your address matches your 2022 tax return
Check "Transfer my tax information"
Submit

If you can't use IRS DDE (didn't file taxes, filed amended return, etc.), you'll enter manually.

Step 9: Student Financial Information {#step-9}

Same process as parent section. Report:

Income from work (W-2s)
Untaxed income
Assets: cash, savings, checking, investments (529 plans count as parent asset if parent owns)
Don't report: Retirement accounts (401k, IRA), primary home equity, life insurance

Step 10: Sign and Submit {#step-10}

Student signs with student FSA ID
Parent signs with parent FSA ID (if dependent)
Save the confirmation page — it shows your estimated Student Aid Index (SAI)

After You Submit

FAFSA Submission Summary

Within 1-3 days, you'll receive an email with your FAFSA Submission Summary (replaces the old SAR). It includes:

Your SAI
Estimated Pell Grant eligibility
List of schools receiving your data
Any issues requiring action

Making Corrections

Log back in at studentaid.gov → "Make Corrections." Common fixes:

Adding/removing schools
Correcting income/asset figures
Updating dependency status

Professional Judgment

If your financial situation changed since 2022 (job loss, divorce, medical expenses), contact your college's financial aid office. They can adjust your SAI based on documented changes.
